Hostelling Western Canada

Sept. 8, 1999

next day

It is already past midnight when I type this in downtown Vancouver hostel. Today I spent 9 hours driving from Lake Louise to Vancouver. On my way picked up yet another hitchhiker -- Blain Moses, or 'yellow owl'. B is a Cree Indian. He told me hunting and fishing stories. I invited him to lunch. Later we stopped at the town of Hope for Canadian's Mosen beer. With a full time job as a house painter, he did not seem to have much money. In summer, he usually spends three months fishing. He shoots a moose every year in January, a time when only Indians can hunt moose.

When settled down in Cambie 2 hostel, it was already 9:30PM. Went out to dinner with my new roommate, Douglas and a German girl. We went to a Mexican restaurant. Douglas is a structural engineer from Scotland. He is here for vacation. The German girl studied English in UC Berkeley for a short time before this trip. She wanted to be an interpreter. Today is Douglas's birthday.

One of my achievements today is having finished the audible book "Eat The Rich" by P.J. O'Rourke while driving.
